GroLondon

My-So-Called-Life-Banner

Does anyone else remember watching this show? It was cancelled in 1995… wow. What’s that, 18 years ago?!

I was infatuated with Claire Danes’ hair. I decided back then that one day I would have copper hair like her.

This weekend after much deliberation I took the plunge and got rid of my ombre hair after four years! I also tried out a new hairdressers called GroLondon. I’ve recently moved house to SW London so Gro is really close to me (compared to my previous hairdressers).  I decided to go for a copper/auburn colour like Isla Fisher.

I booked a consultation with Carla first to talk through the process and get an expert opinion about my colour change. Straight away I decided that I was completely happy to put my hair in Carla’s hands. She placed different colour samples next to my face to see what colours would work best… which made me feel much better! I have so often got my hair done only to discover that a colour washes me out and I have to layer make-up on to compensate. It was reassuring that Carla took my skin tone into account and didn’t just pick a colour that looked nice in the book (but not necessarily on my head!)

On Saturday I went in for my colour overhaul. It wasn’t an easy process as my hair had been darkened and lightened in so many areas that it was completely uneven. Carla first had to pre lighten my dark hair, and then darken my ombre ends so that the copper shade would appear even.

I really liked the atmosphere in Gro, all the staff were really friendly… to top it all off they serve their drinks in take-away cups which I absolutely loved!!! No more hair ending up in my cup! Plus it was way easier to hold while reading mags. (I am one of those people who gets a take away cup even when I am sitting in the cafe…!)

Four hours later  and my hair was finally finished. I’m still getting used to it but I have to say I am really happy with it. I was a bit scared at first that I would hate a change – I am a boring creature of habit (honestly, I get the same thing for lunch everyday – to the point the staff just say ‘the usual?’ when I enter the cafe!). I have to go back again in five weeks to get my colour redone as Carla said it will probably fade quite quickly this time due to how light my hair was. I got a good two inches off too as the ends were so damaged!

Forgot I had dyed my hair when I went into the bathroom this morning – was a confusing moment!

What do you think?

red

It is time for a change.

Yes, after three years of ombre/dip dye-esque hair I think it is time to leave the blonde ends behind.

*gasp*

I have been trying to get the ends of my hair as blonde as possible for the last few months… but now I am just a bit bored of the ombre look. As much as I used to love it I now feel like a carbon copy of every other ‘hipster wannabe’ in London. I contemplated dying the ends mint but quickly decided this would be a one month look before I felt like Kermit the frog.

So after a lot of thinking I have decided to go for an auburn red colour – think Isla Fisher natural hues and not Rihanna’s mad red mane.

What do you think? Which red colour is your favourite?!

I’ve also made a Pinterest board of red hair inspiration if you fancy a gander!

poms not bombs

So it is officially a new year. The world didn’t end. And I am back in London after a lovely trip to Ireland for Christmas.

Here are some little bits and pieces that I have picked up in the shops recently.

  3 4 7

The Pom tee and cross shorts are both from Urban Outfitters and the Geek jumper is from Topshop.

Urban Outfitters had an amazing 50% off sale products when I was there – which was amazing. I got the below skirt for £7 reduced from £28. I normally don’t find that many nice things in the sales so this was great an achievement for me!

christmas outfit of the day

Another Christmas has come and gone.

Hope you all had a wonderful one! This is my favourite time of the year and I am now happily snuggled up on my sofa at home in Ireland. Not back to London until the 7th of Jan – hurrah!

tatty

I got a beautiful Tatty Devine Hellebore Rose Necklace from my mum as a present which I promptly put on and wore all day! I have also slightly mastered (after three years!) the GHD wave. I am hopeless with styling my hair so this was a massive accomplishment!

For Christmas day I decided to wear a festive jumper… well… dinosaurs are festive right?!

The lipstick I’m wearing was a Christmas pressie too – it is a Chubby Stick from Clinique in shade Two Ton Tomato. Felt lovely on my lips, not as drying as lipsticks and lasted all day!

I also got some sleep-in rollers which I can’t wait to try. I am the laziest person ever when it comes to doing my hair in the morning before work – my hair is lucky if it sees a hairbrush! So if these work it will mean less time spent trying to tame my mane in the mornings.

Did you get or give any exciting gifts this year? Or try any new make-up brands for a festive look?

pink and floral

I am fully embracing jumper season.

…Perhaps my favourite season since summer seems to no longer exist.

This beautiful jumper was a birthday present from my lovely friend who has now moved to Australia (sob!).

I tried to get a bit more of an autumn vibe going on by wearing a floral headband. Oooh I do love pink!

mint

I love mint.

Mint herbs, mint clothes, mint toothpaste. Mint, mint, mint.

As the weather is getting colder I am happy to be whipping out the jumpers and knits and snuggling up in cosy clothes.

I have long said farewell to summer and now the only option is to embrace the cold… and rain… brr. On the plus side H&M have some really nice jumpers at the moment including their collection modeled by Lana Del Rey which includes some lovely knitwear.

I got the below jumper for £14.99, they had some other mint ones for £29.99 which were a bit more plush. I opted for this one to save some funds, and a bit stronger in colour than the other options.

Got some lovely birthday presents last month including my watch, K necklace and boots. I don’t mind not wearing sandals anymore when I get to wear these studded boots!

Have you embraced winter clothes yet?

my hair: pimps & pinups

I have been meaning to write this post for a while. I often get asked where I get my hair done, what I ask for etc so thought it was about time I filled you dear readers in!

What I ask for: Balayage/ombre (where hair starts darker at the roots and fades through the lengths)

Where I go in London: Pimps & Pinups

Where I went in Ireland: Style Club

Before I discovered Pimps & Pinups I went to  Paul Edmonds near Harrods but their price tag put me off. The last time I went there for a cut, colour and highlights it cost me over £250 ! Way too much. To be honest it was not even worth that. I opted for balayage but the lines were not ‘softened’ enough. With good balayage you can’t really tell where the colour starts as it is subtly ‘painted’ on to your hair (often backcombed to create this effect). With Paul Edmonds, I could clearly see where the colour began and the highlights looked ‘blocky’.

The Pimps & Pinups Experience

Image from Kineda

My roommate recommended Rachel at Pimps & Pinups to me so I decided to give them a go. I had heard good things about them and I loved their website so figured it was worth a shot.

The salon itself has a trendy, East London vibe. All the staff look amazing and have the most beautiful tattoos! Every time I go in there I want to get a new tattoo…

The usual teas and coffees are on offer… but also wine and beer too. You also get a head massage at the sink which is one of my favourite things about going to the hairdressers.

Rachel is very friendly and put me at ease straight away. She  genuinely listens to what you have to say and doesn’t try to rush you when explaining how you want your hair. The first time I went there I opted for a more natural balayage look but on my most recent trip I decided to go for a more dip dye/bleached ends effect. The thing I love about Rachel is the fact that she really cares about customer satisfaction. Before leaving she always asks if I’m happy with my hair and to have a look when at home , before adding to give her a call with any problems.

What if you’re not 100% happy with the results?

Now, I hate complaining. It makes me feel awkward. I don’t necessarily feel awkward expressing my dissatisfaction. It is more how the other person reacts and makes me feel like I am the one at fault. On numerous occasions when returning clothes or asking for a different drink I have been met with a frosty stare and angered look, you’d swear I just told the person I hate them.

Anyway my point is, I think it is really important that people feel they can express what they really think of a haircut, meal etc. without feeling that they are the ones to blame. I once went back to Style Club in Dublin after getting my hair done as it really didn’t turn out right. They didn’t seem very happy with me. I spent the entire time feeling like I had done something wrong and couldn’t wait to get out of there. I wasn’t charged for the colour redo but was charged for the wash and blow-dry.

So, after my second trip to Rachel at Pimps & Pinups I went home and took a proper look at my hair – it looked really nice and the cut was great… but… it just wasn’t as blonde at the ends as I had wanted. As Rachel always said to call her with a problem I decided I may as well, otherwise I would have to wait three months until I got my hair done again and feel a bit ‘meh’ about my hair in the meantime.

When I went back to Rachel she was totally understandable and said she would make the ends really blonde for me! She wasn’t anyway awkward with me and chatted away as normal! The end result was perfect and exactly what  I wanted. The fact is that I always recommend Rachel to my friends and now even more so.  She also didn’t charge me a thing for the redo (although I tipped her for being so nice about it!) and I absolutely love the results! I can now also have a completely BLONDE bun!

Price: Pimps and Pin ups prices vary, but for me (cut, colour, highlights) it tends to be around £150. For exact prices I would advise ringing them: 020 7426 2121

Products

How I look after my hair: I use a purple toned condition by Redken (pic 3) to keep the brassiness out of my blonde. I also use Kevin Murphy’s ‘Young Again’  serum and Redken ‘Anti-snap’ (pic 1). If I am going out I use Headrush (pic 2) for extra shine! I let my hair dry naturally whenever possible and try to avoid straighteners!

Tip

Before I get my hair done I always create a new album on my phone of hair inspiration so I have a clear image in my head of what I want. I always think it is best to show your hairdresser a picture (or several!) of the colour you want as a lot can be lost in interpretation! Remember when Phoebe cut Monica’s hair in Friends?! Monica said Demi Moore… but Phoebe thought Dudley Moore! Make sure both you and the hairdresser have a clear picture of the look you’re going for to avoid Monica-esque tears! For ombre hair I tend to bring in photos of Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson, Caroline Flack and any other nice photos I find in mags, Pinterest etc.

What do you guys think? Let me know if you have any hair product recommendations or tips!

collars and studs

I really like Urban Outfitter’s stuff at the moment.

…mainly their t-shirts – for boys. Some amazing avenger and dinosaur designs. Why can’t they have as amazing tees for girls?

Anyhoo! I bought a playsuit – which is really comfy and stretchy (essential in my eyes – no silly zips which require help to get dressed)!

little red

I have spent many months looking for a decent red midi or maxi skirt.

Red, it seems, is not a popular skirt colour right now… or red skirts have simply gone into hiding upon hearing of my arrival into a store.

Finally, when walking past Hobbs on the way to buy food (not clothes, food!) I spotted a red skirt and it was in the sale. It had to be a sign! I went into the shop to investigate and (another sign!) they had my size… but only one left. That was it, I thought, the universe  wants me to have this skirt.

I bought the skirt, sure it would have been rude not to.

tigers and gold

I am on holiday. Hurrah!

I have left the cloud and mugginess of London and am in sunny Tenerife. I can finally wear my summer clothes without packing a brolly in my bag and no longer do I fear getting rained on when I wear sandals!

I am been waiting months to wear my new crop tops and high waisted skirts! I presume upon returning home they will be packed away until whatever day next summer falls on – I predict it will be a Tuesday in March.

Although I am still hopeful for a sunny August *crosses fingers and toes*
