the ‘i love your blog’ interview

30 Nov

Ahhhhh I love questions!

Right so there is a little interview item going around the blogosphere at the mo’ and the lovely Aisling from Think What You Like nominated me to answer these little questions…

Why did you create your blog?

Originally I started the ol’ blog back in college as part of my Online Journalism module in 2008 but gave up when the lecturer told us we could quit! Revived it then in Summer 2009 after finishing my degree and finding myself with no ‘creative’ outlet so to speak! The days of writing for college mags and papers were gone and I missed it!

What kind of blogs do you follow?

All kinds really! My favourites are personal blogs – I’m nosey! I love hearing distinct voices from my favourite bloggers – if a blog makes me laugh it’s immediately on my favourite list! I love fashion blogs too – especially ones dealing with personal style and quirky bits. Food blogs and photo blogs are another two types I like. If there’s photos of food then all the better! Nom nom nom.

Favourite make-up brand?

I love make-up! For foundation and concealer I would pick Bobbi Brown. I love her philosophy when it comes to make up, she’s all about enhancing what you have – not covering it up… which is pretty nice! I love MAC eyeshadows and lipsticks (Ruby Woo and Show Orchid and my faves!!!). Illamasqua do great pigment colours – great blushers!

Favourite clothing brand?

I love, love, love Topshop and ASOS. Tho’ lately I’m really starting to like River Island a lot more too – their faux fur range is excellent!

Your indespesible make-up product?

My Bobbi Brown concealer for those early mornings! And I can’t go anywhere without carmex – especially with the blizzard going on outside my window at the minute!!!

Your favourite colour?

I would probably pick yellow and red… although not put together! I don’t want to look like an ad for fire lighters!

Your perfume?

D&G Light Blue. It’s been my fave since I was 16!

Your favourite film?

Gah! Tough one! My top three are: Titanic, The Notebook and Blow.

What country would you like to visit and why?

It’s not a country but I would love to go to New York! So far I’ve only ever been to the airport there, teased by the views from the windows! Since it’s so cold today I’d love to go somewhere roasting like Dubai or Australia! Mmm sun!

Write a question yourself and answer it: what food are you craving right now?

I am starving! Vegetable Kung Po with extra cashew nuts, egg fried rice… and a spring roll! NOM.

And here’s my list of bloggers to continue on the trend!

i want to get away

25 Jun

Oh dear!

It is only lately that I have finally realised how utterly crappy this recession malark is.

*sigh*

So I had spent the year working, well,  freelancing in Dublin. Freelancing smcheelancing! Some months I was lucky getting work almost every day… others (like February!) I only worked one or two days…

The thing with my freelancing gigs was that it was always cover work. Basically keeping the seat warm for someone as they enjoyed paid leave in the Algarve! *jealous* Anyhoo as I was doing all this I spent the evenings updating my CV and firing it off to radio stations/tv stations/magazines/newspapers/etc around Dublin. Got a few interviews here and there but nothing solid ever materialised.

One such newspaper interviewer (for a sub-editing position) told me that while I have a great CV and portfolio of written work I seemed much more suited to a broadcast journalist or reporter… hmm, not great for me considering there are very few (if any!) advertised vacancies in those areas – I would happily have taken any job in a somewhat related field.

So here I am, back in Waterford *so long Dublin* with no job (besides the odd few hours that Today FM and 4fm throw my way). It wasn’t worth my while looking for a new apartment when my hours in work realistically don’t pay enough for the rent.

I decided to see if I am entitled to any money due to stamps I’ve built up from working since the age of 18… but alas it seems since I have moved home and am under 25 I am entitled to nada!

So like many of my friends and classmates from college it seems the only viable option at this stage is emigration. So I have applied for a Canadian visa and am thinking of hitting the slopes in BC in a few months to teach kids to ski!

The catch-22, so to speak, is that I need a job to fund my travels! Luckily I have some  money saved up at least!

It’s really sad to think of all the qualified graduates out there, like myself, who simply cannot find a job thanks to the mistakes of the bankers and the Irish Government.

Now the only question is – will I ever come back to live in Ireland if I leave??

trinity ball 2010

19 Apr

Luckily I only took photos at the pre-BBQ… ’cause I doubt the ones at the ball would have been anything other than people asleep on the grass.

Fun night.

Now UCD ball on Friday.

Although can someone explain why college balls have turned into mini festivals with tents and the likes?? DCU wasn’t like that when I was in college!

i wake up everyday it’s a daydream

18 Apr

…Trinity Ball was this weekend… Ohhh it was a good’un!

Really starting to feel like summer now – actually hot (shocking!), colleges wrapping up and serious ball time happening… I’m just pretending I’m still a student!

so you want a career in telly?

Oh dear. If only I saw this before I spent three years studying journalism.

Love Charlie Brooker!

Doodles

2 Jan

I normally doodle cats on everything… Yes I sound like a crazy cat lady.

I’m trying to spend less time drawing cats lately tho’… I found some old college notes the other day and the amounts of doodles were shocking! How did I manage to learn anything in class?! Pages and pages of drawings… On top of all that I have about a million (slight exaggeration!) sketch books filled with… well… mainly cats, ha…

I miss art class – not that I was particularly good at it… but it was fun!

I Have A Degree… Now What?

11 Nov

Huzzah! Finally graduated from DCU with the ol’ BA in Journalism! Was touch and go at times when assignments piled on where we fretted if we’d actually pass… and a short stint in first year when I thought I wanted to drop out… but after all that I managed to get a degree.

Phew.

graduation 046

I feel like Harry Potter...

Delighted I didn’t trip on the stage too…

After all that I still don’t know what I wanna do with my life! Gah!

Kinda thought that by the time I finished college I’d have a clearer idea… but ne’er to that… s’pose I’ll just have to go with the flow!

Hmm… well what I like might be a good start:

  • Radio
  • Movies
  • Singing
  • Art
  • Broadcasting
  • Writing
  • Animals
  • Dancing
  • Drama
  • Fashion
  • Photography

Hmm… Should I  join the circus??

I Love Discounts <3

20 Oct

The latest  Grazia is verrrrrry exciting (the one with Lily Allen on the cover)

It has a whole page with vouchers that (surprisingly) can be used by Irish shoppers. I generally find that discounts offered by British mags never really apply in Ireland so was delighted by this!

25% off in Warehouse and 25% off from ASOS are the ones I like the best. But hurry! The ASOS one is only valid till 21st of Oct (tomorrow!) I used mine just now to buy some luffy items and saved £32 with the voucher (thank you Grazia!) which is a lot to us student folk. Here’s what I bought…

Now back to doing my project… wouldn’t college be great without assignments?! :)

Just A Bitta Fun

17 Oct

New College. New Course. New Apartment. New Dog. NEW NEW NEW.

My motto for this year is to live for fun.

It makes sense! While studying journalism at DCU for the last three years all my extra-curricular stuff was focused on building up my CV. I was on the college paper editorial team, magazines, radio etc… and while I enjoyed them to an extent it wasn’t something I got into for me, or hobbies… just CV building – which is quite ‘bleh’ now that I think about it.

So this year I’ve started a masters in a totally different college, GCD, on the other side of town and decided enough is cuteenough with this CV building nonsense! (Plus I don’t really know at the moment what I wanna do anymore) I don’t want to revolve my life around work (or getting work) – I want to enjoy college before it’s over and I look back regretting what I didn’t do! In ways I feel I missed out on some parts of DCU cuz all the socs I was involved with were for media … not the most fun.

I started Salsa classes last week… and it was actually really cool! Now I’ve never done Salsa before so was a little apprehensive but I really enjoyed just doing something totally unrelated to college work! My legs were sore the next day tho… sign of a good workout I guess!

In secondary school I was obsessed with music and singing but somehow forgot about all that in DCU, not intentionally it just kinda happened. I suppose my friends in college weren’t that into those things and I didn’t want to go to events by myself at the time. It can be quite daunting to go along to things where you don’t know anyone… your head is full of ‘what ifs’… Eh “what if everyone there is already friends (or more annoyingly BFFS) and I end up standing in the corner staring intently at the brick-work or playing with my phone pretending to text as they chat amongst themselves?!”…

I decided to get back into the whole music thiiinnng this year (fuelled by my obsession with Glee) and put my name down for Choir Soc. I went all by myself! (I’m aware that at 22 I should be used to doing things by myself…) It was a little bit nerve-wrecking auditioning in a room fool of people (esp. since only 12 people were gonna be picked… but I was one of those – yay!) but I have to say the whole thing was so much (and I know I maaaay be over-using this word…) fun! It was great doing the warm-ups and it felt nice to be doing something enjoyable, not editing articles or ringing up politicians who yell at you!

I joined Drama Soc as well but nothing’s happened there yet… so quite a list of fun things to do. Plus it helps that I’m really loving the whole masters item. It’s Applied Digital Media so a bit different from my undergrad – it’s actually really arty and design based which I love. All in all this college year is shaping up to be ten times better than last year (which wouldn’t be hard cuz last year was aawwwful).

The way I see it is I have time enough to worry about work, CVs and all that malarky! Right now I’m in college, I’m young (tho’ my friends beg to differ -22 is old apparently) and I want to have fun!
