the big move…

6 Aug

Starting a new job is like getting a haircut.

You may stick to what you like – getting a trim and some safe caramel highlights – or go completely different a la Katy Perry and take the plunge from black to blonde! When you undertake a big change like this (as all fellow hair-dyers will know!) you have to risk having unsightly orange ‘bosco the clown’ hair momentarily until you get to your perfect blonde shade.

Coming from a radio/PR/media background, the step into recruitment was a pretty big career change. I was happily working in radio for the last few years in Dublin having just left university. Things were going well – I got some great experience researching and reporting for some brilliant radio stations and even met Jedward! *tumble weed* But after a while I decided it was time to move on. I always wanted to live in London and the impending cut backs in my last office gave me the push I needed to move on.

One of my best friends from home had just started a new job in recruitment and after meeting her for dinner one evening it got me thinking about looking into recruitment roles in London. Certain aspects of recruitment sounded pretty similar to my previous jobs – and I loved the thoughts of being in a sociable role where I got paid to chat and meet great candidates and clients!

I knew coming from a creative, fun, working environment that I wanted similar and wouldn’t suit a strict, formal office.

One of the most important things for me in moving jobs was to work with nice people in a fun environment. I liked the look of Ecom’s site with their bright designs and little ‘cartoony egg’ people graphics (to use the…technical term!) – I’m like a magpie, shiny bright things catch my attention.

So that had me sold – I fired off my CV and cover letter. I flew over from Dublin for interviews at Ecom and quickly found out how expensive looking for another job is! I didn’t really want to hand in my notice without a solid offer of a job but knew if I didn’t get the job at Ecom that I would just have to come to London and hope for the best, as flying back and forth for interviews was not an option.

After meeting a few of the staff, the role at Ecom quickly became my first choice. At the second interview I was told that they’d let me know by the end of the day. I was flying back to Dublin at 5pm that day so knew it could go either way – either I would be very happy indeed… or I would be attempting to busk on the plane hoping to earn a few extra quid to fund my move to London as an unemployed person.

Luckily I didn’t have to subject the cabin crew to my fantastic singing and spoon playing.

After that, things happened really quickly – I finished up my radio job, said goodbye to my friends, family and lovely dogs and off to London I went…with three massive suitcases!

I was so excited to move, and slightly terrified. I was going from working in an area I had studied in university and had worked in for years, to something completely different! I had the fear of permanently being stuck in the orange ‘bosco the clown’ hair phase (see my hair analogy does make sense…I think!). Luckily after my first day I knew I’d love Ecom – the people were lovely and I was allowed to play Jedward and 5ive on Spotify (with only a few complaints!).

I’ve been here three months now and have had to get used to living in a new country as well as starting a new job.

As with any new job there’s a lot to take in, in the first month especially, and for a while I was even dreaming about Ecom! The most exciting thing so far was doing my first deal and placing a candidate in their dream job…and the work day out to Ascot was pretty amazing too – I won £23…then lost £18 of it on another bet! But hey that’s still a £5 profit!

I can honestly say that I look forward to going to work in the mornings – partly because breakfast is my favourite meal! – but also because I work with a great bunch of people in a fantastic city!

shoes… let’s get some shoes…

23 Sep

A/wear are launching their shoe collection this October!

Now… it didn’t really dawn on me that A/wear didn’t do shoes until now! I am in a shoe bubble. Let’s be honest my size 2 feet (yes they grew from size 1!) probably won’t fit into most of them. But still – they’re nice to look at… the shoes that is… not my feet… ahhh no my feet are lovely!

(all pics via a/wear)

The boots are my fave! They might just fit!

The full footwear collection will be available in the following stores from the 4th of October, A|wear Grafton St, Henry St, Dundrum, Patrick St, Waterford, Castlebar & Awear.com

this is gonna be the best summer ever…

19 Apr

…because I said so!

Well it will be hard to beat summer ’08 when I went on a J1 to San Fran… but I have high hopes for this year!

Why you ask!?! Well…

  • New Apartyment with the lovely girlies from 4fm… city centre – Dublin city is our back garden. Boom!

  • Summer holiday with the girls from school… to Greece possibly! I’ve never actually been on a proper girly sun holiday… and never got to go away last year because I was snowed under with work (no holiday time on internships!) so cannot wait for a week of sun and cocktails :)

  • Possibly New York for a week or two in July…

  • Sex & the City 2!

  • And just general summer-ness: sun, nights out, weekends away, beer gardens, BBQs…

I’m just hoping my overly enthusiastic attitude for summer will make the sun shine!!!

…Trinity Ball was this weekend… Ohhh it was a good’un!

Really starting to feel like summer now – actually hot (shocking!), colleges wrapping up and serious ball time happening… I’m just pretending I’m still a student!

I don’t know why but over the last week I have become obsessed with cakes and pastries.

Nom.

I find myself wandering down to Bewley’s after work to grab their most calorific cream and jam concoction… Even thinking about it makes me drool! They have the nicest cakes in Dublin!

Right now I’m having a lazy Sunday… ie I am not leaving my house even if it catches fire.

There’s a Spar around the corner from my house and I can’t stop thinking about all the pastry goodness that’s inside.

I wish there was a take-away delivery service for cake and desserts… without having to order dinner!

Wouldn’t that be great?!

Most of the time I only want dessert for dinner anyway!

“Eh what do you want for dinner?”… “Cake”… ring, ring… “Hello I’d like to order a chocolate and cream cake please… 30 mins? Great!”

Have I got a problem?!

Ok I am now officially starving.

Off to cook dinner.

Lasagne.

Boo. I want cake.

I have been crazy busy with work the last few weeks – hence the lack of posts!

We had our Shave or Dye event in aid of the Irish Cancer Society in work on Thursday and raised over €360,000!

Matt Cooper dyed his hair a dashing shade of pink and Tony Fenton went green! We also made it into the Guinness Book of Records for most heads shaved in an hour!

Ray D’Arcy also got in on the action by getting his locks chopped off too!

It was a great morning, though I was wrecked by the end of it and took a sneaky nap before I was back in work for 4:30pm!

Next week looks like it will be the same… working 6am – 7pm on Monday… and 9am-7pm for the rest of the week (including 10-5 on Sat and 930-130 on Sunday so no day off!) All good… except for the fact that I am obsessed with sleep. I need at least 8 hours to function… ideally 10 hours.

Oh dear.

Looks like I may have to forego showering for the week to catch some extra Zzz’s.

Fear Sneachta! (Snow!)

10 Jan

So much snow!

Woke up today to a blanket of snow. Found myself singing Christmas songs and eating chocolate for breakfast. Those things should never be done after January 1st. Damn you snow.

Was going to build a Snowcat (no Snowman for me thank you very much!)… but I forgot how cold the snow was. I suppose the fact it’s frozen rain should be a clue. Fingerless gloves are useless! FAIL! So just brought CoCo for a walk instead … and I didn’t fall! Makes a change from my falling-on-my-ass routine in Dublin.

Now I’ve had my snowy fun – so you can go away now snow! I need to get back to Dublin!

More snow…

9 Jan

(Via The Telegraph)

Woke up this morning feelin’ like P.Diddy…

Eh… no, not really. Looked out the window to see the street covered in snow (noooooo!), felt a bit panic-y for a moment “Will I be stuck in Dublin, roomie-less, with no food for a week?!” I had images of myself dying of hunger and boredom in my little apartment.

I decided to get the train down to Waterford to avoid any sort of starvation. The ol’ parents insist I eat which has its benefits at times. My jelly bean diet in work probably wouldn’t go down too well at home.

Speaking of food – ditch any form of post-New Years dieting! All I want when I’m cold having walked MILES in the snow is a massive, HUGE pizza – no salad or Ryvita thank you very much! As Tom Doorley said in yesterday’s Irish Daily Mail – stodge is best in the cold snap! Hear, hear!

So the train journey home took the usual two and a half hours… but there was NO heat on the train. Cue ice-induced headache and frozen sandwich.

Snow, snow GO AWAY!

The end of the world

What is going on with the weather lately?!

Dublin bus is out of action today due to snow. Bus drivers have refused to work until roads are gritted… so a lot of stranded people I’d imagine.

Traffic is bumper to bumper. Taxis are non-existent.

I had to walk home from work. In the cold, snow, slush, ice, crap. Tho’ luckily I live within walking distance (40 mins or so) can’t imagine how other people will manage if they live outside the city centre.

Boo.

Sure even the Coronation Street team in the UK got a snow day off work yesterday as they couldn’t film due to snow!

I can’t feel my toes

3 Jan

I am so cold!

At least my laptop is offering me some sort of warmth as it overheats on my lap – that can’t be good for it. I haven’t been in my Dublin apartment for almost two weeks… so that’s two weeks it went without any heat.. and it is FREEZING now. I’m wearing layers and layers, scarves (yes plural!), furry socks and even have a hot water bottle on my feet… and I’m still cold.

I made the trek from Waterford to Dublin today – it got more and more icy the closer we got to the capital. Snowy fields, mountains… how lovely. Well no, not really. Snow sucks. It’s crap. It turns to slush. Makes me slip. And it’s TOO cold.

Snow is nice in certain circumstances… if you’re on a ski trip, yes that’s about it really.

I think it would be so much better if it only snowed in our back gardens – that way we’d have all the snowman fun and get to look at the ‘pretty’ snow without having to skid in our cars, slip on footpaths and make general fools of ourselves as we undoubtedly fall on our asses on the way to work.

Now if someone wants to buy me some snow and deck out my garden (like the amazing dude below) then that would be ok. Snow in instances like that would be acceptable.

*swoon*
