shellac nails at pomme pe’dour

23 Feb

I love nail varnish. Nail varnish, however, does not love me.

I put it on, all thoughtful with careful strokes avoiding getting it outside the nail… then BAM! – I smudge it putting on my PJs or hit it off my mobile. More often than not I also manage to paint some hair into it from the cat or fluff from a cotton ball. You can only imagine how great you nails look with fluff poking out.

If I am lucky enough no to do all the above while my nails are drying, I will chip it the next day opening a compact, putting on my earrings or opening my watch clasp. So all in all I am not very lucky with my nails!

On account of me and nail varnish’s ill-fated union, I decided to try out shellac – which is a long lasting manicure .

I have got it done once before and it lasted three/four weeks! Shellac creates a super shiny finish and is practically chip-proof. Last time I had over two weeks of perfect nails, then a few chips appeared in week three.

I got my second done shellac yesterday as an after work treat in Pomme Pe’Dour, Hammersmith. In total it costs £30 pounds, and an extra fiver if you already have a shellac on your nails to remove.

First your nails are smoothed and shaped – round or square (I chose round), before a clear base coat of varnish is applied. You then put your hand in an ultraviolet lightbox where the varnish sets. Two coats of polish follow – I picked a pink/coral colour to inject a bit of brightness to my days! Both coats require a blast of light in the little lightbox, another top coat and then you’re down! All in all it took about 45 minutes.

I went with my friend Rebecca who got a gorgeous French manicure (shellac too) which was £35.

The main thing that annoys me about shellac is the removal process – it needs to be soaked in acetone for 15 minutes and it is always best to get this done in the salon, otherwise you could really damage your nails! Last time I opted to do it myself and spent over 30 minutes soaking my nails and scraping off the varnish – not advised as my nails looked shook after it! So if you get shellac done you must account for going to get it taken off after three to four weeks.

On the topic of nails – I absolutely love Soap & Glory’s hand cream ‘Hand Food‘ – it smells beautiful, quite like Miss Dior Cherie perfume. My nails aways feel great and smooth after a manicure so I try to lash on the hand cream for the few days after to keep that just-out-of-the-salon feeling!

I keep this little tube in my handbag and on my desk at work!

pucker up

14 Nov

I am a big fan of statement lips.

There is nothing quite like red lips to dress up an outfit and immediately make you feel glam.

My lipstick of choice is normally MAC (Ruby Woo) – as with any bold lip colour, unless you have a liner to match it will generally bleed around the edges giving you a look only fit for Twilight. Recently I bought two Lip Markers (£8 each) from Topshop on impulse (story of my life!), thinking they’d save time on lip liner as I am all cutting corners and getting out the door quick when there’s pints to be had!

Lip markers are so easy to use – it is just like drawing on your lip with a felt tip marker!… as I am sure we all did in primary school. No? Just me then! They really are almost fool proof and so easy to apply. You simply apply directly to lips, outlining first and then filling in… and voila!

Unlike lip gloss you’re not left with any stickiness which avoids the ever so sexy hair-stuck-to-lips look, a regular occurrence with the wind at this time of year. The colour lasts so much longer than regular lipstick too as it is a lip stain – so stays put when you’re drinking! My favourite shade so far is Berry (first pic below!)…

Topshop are now also doing Lip Tattoos (£12)

Each pack contains 3 applications and they are said to last up to 8 hours! Would you wear these ones? I have to say… I really want the ones with the heart design!

i’m a wonder woman – pow pow

21 Feb

Wonder Woman is fronting MAC’s new collection.

Due to hit stores from March (as in next week!) Huzzah!

I am a little bit in love with the design and packaging.

Always a sucker for anything pop-arty and bright.

I love the blue brushes too! Have to say I absolutely love how MAC market their products.

I already want all of the above (although my bank balance may disagree)…

I just want to have a red lippy with Wonder Woman written on the outside – beats the usual black package.

Plus it will obviously mean I am a fully fledge super hero. FACT.

Also love the felt eye liner thingy – looks a bit like a magic marker!

the ‘i love your blog’ interview

30 Nov

Ahhhhh I love questions!

Right so there is a little interview item going around the blogosphere at the mo’ and the lovely Aisling from Think What You Like nominated me to answer these little questions…

Why did you create your blog?

Originally I started the ol’ blog back in college as part of my Online Journalism module in 2008 but gave up when the lecturer told us we could quit! Revived it then in Summer 2009 after finishing my degree and finding myself with no ‘creative’ outlet so to speak! The days of writing for college mags and papers were gone and I missed it!

What kind of blogs do you follow?

All kinds really! My favourites are personal blogs – I’m nosey! I love hearing distinct voices from my favourite bloggers – if a blog makes me laugh it’s immediately on my favourite list! I love fashion blogs too – especially ones dealing with personal style and quirky bits. Food blogs and photo blogs are another two types I like. If there’s photos of food then all the better! Nom nom nom.

Favourite make-up brand?

I love make-up! For foundation and concealer I would pick Bobbi Brown. I love her philosophy when it comes to make up, she’s all about enhancing what you have – not covering it up… which is pretty nice! I love MAC eyeshadows and lipsticks (Ruby Woo and Show Orchid and my faves!!!). Illamasqua do great pigment colours – great blushers!

Favourite clothing brand?

I love, love, love Topshop and ASOS. Tho’ lately I’m really starting to like River Island a lot more too – their faux fur range is excellent!

Your indespesible make-up product?

My Bobbi Brown concealer for those early mornings! And I can’t go anywhere without carmex – especially with the blizzard going on outside my window at the minute!!!

Your favourite colour?

I would probably pick yellow and red… although not put together! I don’t want to look like an ad for fire lighters!

Your perfume?

D&G Light Blue. It’s been my fave since I was 16!

Your favourite film?

Gah! Tough one! My top three are: Titanic, The Notebook and Blow.

What country would you like to visit and why?

It’s not a country but I would love to go to New York! So far I’ve only ever been to the airport there, teased by the views from the windows! Since it’s so cold today I’d love to go somewhere roasting like Dubai or Australia! Mmm sun!

Write a question yourself and answer it: what food are you craving right now?

I am starving! Vegetable Kung Po with extra cashew nuts, egg fried rice… and a spring roll! NOM.

And here’s my list of bloggers to continue on the trend!

i ain’t ‘fraid of no ghosts

1 Nov

I think every weekend should be Halloween… or at least one weekend a month!

Tho’ I have to say the sights about Dublin were quite hilario – lashing rain and girls wearing bikini tops and ass skimming skirts. Oh dear. Not a pretty sight! In general the guys about the place looked great – way more effort put in than most of the girls roaming the streets!

I get a little more excited about my make-up than the costumes I must say. All about the feathery lashes and colours! I even bought coloured contacts – but chickened out on wearing them! Just couldn’t handle putting them in my eye… probably just as well, don’t think they’d be the easiest to take out when drunk!

Got the feather lashes in Hairspray and then just put some individual ones on the lower lash line. I’m a huge blusher fan, the one here is by Illamasqua (doesn’t say the shade on the compact tho’!) – used it on the lids as well!

I had originally intended to dress up as a spelling bee (bee outfit with nerdy glasses and words stuck to the skirt!) but ended up dressing up as a bee to work on Friday morning so felt like something different for last night! I must point out I am verrrry into Halloween so had bought a sailory type outfit too!

Outfit deets:

Sailor Costume and hat: Spoilbrat

Gloves: River Island

Tights: River Island

Necklace: Topshop

I have great Red shoes that I intended to wear..but I couldn’t handle the  pain of heels (yes I suck!) so opted for my good old KG faves.

Speaking of which… I went into BT2 yesterday and saw my KG boots in brown and black… and what did I do?! Yup I ordered them both in size 3! Bit extreme but they are the most comfy shoes  and I love that they look like ice skates!

Also wearing Jessica Simpson curly extensions (loved the straight ones so much I went back for the curly ones!) – I am now fully converted fan of extensions! Tho’ only wear them on nights out!

17 Aug

Love these images!

Lately all my money is going on MAC and Illamasqua – love the intensity you can get with Illamasqua products.

Also love false lashes on the lower lash line – wore them around town one day after my friend did my make-up… the people working on make-up stands liked it… but one of my friends said it looked like my mascara had run and I was crying! Ha. Maybe a look better saved for fancy dress!

lipstick on your collar

6 Aug

My latest obsession is red lips.

Nom.

I’ve been using a Chanel red lipstick (think it’s called Allure Rogue) coupled with a deep berry gloss by Bobbi Brown to soften the look.

Anyhoo take a look at ELLE’s breakdown of the best red lippies – M.A.C’s Ruby Woo is at number one!

Instant glamour.

you want a temporary tattoo, don’t you?

15 Jul

At the ripe old age of 17 I was bitten by the tattoo bug. I had planned to get my tongue pierced (mank – thank God I didn’t) but chickened out and came to the conclusion that a tattoo would be the lesser of two evils in terms of pain.

I spent weeks planning my butterfly design, back in the days when I was actually somewhat artistic. So off I went and got my first tattoo on my back (before they were refered to as ‘tramp stamps’, cheers for that!).

Two years later I decided to get another one. This time a treble clef on my wrist. Neither tattoo particularly hurt and so year after year I have had to force myself not to get my arms  and torso covered in beautiful designs! Would anyone employ me if I was tattooed a la Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie, Fearn Cotton? After all most offices frown upon tattoos on show – unless of course you are one of those deadly girls who work in fashion or make-up, like the girls who I saw in Betsy Johnson in San Fran! The girls in the store had beautiful tattoos all up their arms and across their chest – they didn’t look ‘rough’ (a term many people use to describe tattoo clad folk – well if you see some of the knick knacks in Dublin this term in fitting) but these girls were all actually amazingly beautiful.

You see I have a dilemma right now – I really want another tattoo… and not just some little faint symbol that goes unnoticed but a piece of art!

The top three pics below are the ones I want the most, (rabbit in the second one not the sleeve!)…

The only thing holding me back from getting one on my arm is future employment!

don’t be afraid of the candyman

10 May

As it is almost summer… I have begun to whip out my bright clothes and make-up!

Yellow eyeshadow (a la Beyonce in Telephone), bright pink lip gloss (Illamasqua is the business) and neon pink nails. Although I have yet to really try my yellow eyeshadow… scared I’ll look like I have jaundice or a healing bruise! I feel you need a deep tan to carry it off… so maybe in June/July (am I being over optimistic that I’ll have a tan by then?! piff!)

For Your Benefit

27 Sep

My lectures in college were cancelled on Friday so I decided to head into town to pass the time (and to buy Eclipse – seriously into the Twilight saga at the mo!).

It also happened that I was going out that night for my birthday so I decided to treat myself to some new make-up.

I have to say that in terms of the basics (i.e foundation and concealer) nothing beats Bobbi Brown. I love that you still look like…well you! It’s not too heavy and freckles still show through which I love. I hate the orange-face look that so many girls seem to rock these days…

Anyhoo, I went to the Benefit counter to get my supplies. One of the things I love about Benefit is their design and packaging. It’s so arty and makes me want to buy it (I suppose that is their intention!)

Then I saw their new perfume collection. Wow. The boxes are beautiful. The minute I saw them I was envious of whoever’s job it is to design the boxes. The collection entitled Crescent Row has three perfume types: Sofia, Lee-Lee and Gina. Each box is a mini-house! The front has an image of a door (a different colour for each) and when you open the box the perfume is nestled in the middle… now for the bit that really excited me... when you take out the bottle you see that each side of the inner box is designed like the inside of a house!

Plus the perfume is actually really nice too! As ya can probably tell from my pics I bought Gina which Benefit describe as “an alluring affair of pink pepper, wild raspberry & patchouli”. It reminds me slightly of Chance by Chanel.

I’d love to have the job of designing stuff like those boxes…
