I’m back!

So as I am sure you gathered from from lack of posting that I took a break from blogging for a few weeks.

Everything got a bit manic with my new job, new house and nights out… finding time to blog just didn’t happen. To be honest it was actually really nice to be so busy ! I had forgotten how much fun London is and the people who make it fun are even better.

Things have settled down now so I am happy to say that my blog posts will be more regular.

This is what I have been up to for the last few weeks…

I found a new favourite drink:

I went back to bring a brunette:

I went dancing (a lot!):

See! I didn’t always hate snow!

How cool is my massive pink faux-fur jacket?!

I don’t think my cat Prancer was as into the snow as I was…

…all the better to see you with

I got new glasses!

I recently blogged about needing to get my eyes tested. Turns out I am slightly long sighted. The optician said that it would help with eye strain/headaches etc. if I wore glasses while at my desk. She said that if I wasn’t in a job that required me to sit in front of a computer for hours on end then I probably wouldn’t need glasses at all. Oh the joys of modern living.

I bought a pair or Ray-bans which I love. The frames are tortoiseshell and I am a huge fan of over-sized specs! I have been wearing them this week and trying to get used to them. I have to admit it feels really strange wearing glasses that aren’t sunglasses!

So below are the pair I bought, slightly smaller than the ones in the image above. I was trying to appear all inconspicuous in the shop and take a subtle snap so that I could see if I liked them. Apols for my moody/thunder face!

What do you think? Do you prefer more demure glasses?

oh deer

I got this little necklace on Etsy a few years ago and have just rediscovered it in my jewellery collection.

I really love browsing Etsy for products – I am a sucker for handmade accessories, prints, cards, quilts… everything really! Not sure who made this necklace (too long ago) but I think I still have to box at home so I will take a look and let you all know if I find the specific Etsy shop to link to.

Do you shop on Etsy? Any recommendations?

pink and floral

I am fully embracing jumper season.

…Perhaps my favourite season since summer seems to no longer exist.

This beautiful jumper was a birthday present from my lovely friend who has now moved to Australia (sob!).

I tried to get a bit more of an autumn vibe going on by wearing a floral headband. Oooh I do love pink!

the body shop: coconut lovelies and loyalty card

Until recently I didn’t venture into The Body Shop that much.

I went through a phase of loving it, then moved onto Lush and just forgot about The Body Shop. That is until the other week *dun dun dun*. I genuinely forgot how lovely their products are – not to mention animal friendly and affordable.

I particularly love anything that smells of coconut (summer!) so went in there to find some new bits and bobs. My summer perfume was Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder and while it is fab and smells lush… it not only is limited edition but not cheap either. I went into The Body Shop and spied that they have a coconut Body Mist (£7). I absolutely love it and always have it in my handbag now.

While I was in there one of the shop assistants showed me their Beautifying Oil (in coconut) for face and hair oil (£9) – it felt amazing on my skin! I told her I only wanted one product though as didn’t want to spend too much money. Then she told me about their Love Your Body Card, I am normally sceptical about these things but it sounded amazing – £5 to sign up and then you get 10% off purchases for a year and £5 off on your birthday (you can use it anytime during your birthday month). To be honest it was the birthday part that sold me as it is my birthday today! So I figured I would buy the card, get 10% off straight away and then go back for the oil during September.

I have been using the oil for about 2 weeks now and love it. I only use it on my body and haven’t yet tried it on my face (would I break out?) or hair (would it make it greasy?)… but maybe someday. It leaves my skin feeling lovely and smooth, plus smells of coconuts. They have these products in other scents besides coconut such as vanilla, strawberry and shea. While I was buying the oil I also bought their lip oil in coconut (£4) too – really nice to use although it does not feel as good as carmex for dry lips so I could live without this.

Do you like The Body Shop?

ysl le teint touche eclat foundation: review

As summer slowly fades away so does my tan… which means I need a new foundation.

This summer I mainly used Clinique’s Even Better foundation. It was ok. Nothing too special to be honest. I found it quite hard to blend and it could often look streaky.

Last week I decided it was time to try something new. Through the years I have used about every make-up brand. I went through a phase of loving MAC (but now feel their foundation is a bit ‘heavy’ for daytime’) and Benefit (their foundation made my skin breakout) but my favourite brand has always remained to be Bobbi Brown. I love their oil-free tinted moisturiser but feel I need more coverage as Autumn/Winter arrives. Bobbi Brown’s foundations are really good as well. I bring their stick foundation everywhere with me (shade 4.25) when I need a top up or am planning on going out after work.

In terms of make-up staples, Bobbi Brown is amazing. I use their corrector and concealer for under-eyes; it works miracles if you have dark circles or tired peepers! I have tried so many under-eye concealers, some are too cakey and crease while others some simply don’t offer enough coverage. I think the key is to use a corrector first (under your concealer) as this corrects any discolour, I use light bisque (corrector) followed by sand (concealer).

YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat Foundation has been in every magazine I opened recently and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious. YSL have good quality make-up and their Faux Cils – Volume Effect Mascara is the best mascara I have ever used. I went to the YSL counter in Westfield to try out the Touche Éclat Foundation for myself. I don’t like pink toned foundations – they really don’t look good with my skin tone so I opted for a yellow/beige based shade (B50) which is a lovely tone. I tried out a little blob on my hand and immediately liked the texture. Boom – I was sold! Off I went home with my little bag dying to try it out on my face… and not my little paw.

I have to say I really love this foundation. It blends really easily into my skin and gives a nice amount of coverage without being cakey and masking my own skin. Basically, I can still see my freckles through it – which is what I want in a foundation. The overall effect is a really lovely luminous finish – if I am going out I just add a little of Benefit’s High Beam to my cheeks for some extra luminosity.

The foundation was £28 and, while not cheap, I really think it is worth it for the quality. I only need one pump to cover my whole face so, given the size of the bottle, I would imagine it will last quite a while.

The below pic is taken with my Nikon DSLR so a bit better quality than my iPhone snap above, and hopefully gives you a better idea of how the foundation looks!

Here’s a look at some of my favourite bits and pieces from my make-up collection:

For blusher I use Bobbi Brown’s shimmer block. I also love Topshop’s highlighter powder, I use it on the inner corner of my eyes and cheeks. One of my favourite products in Benefit’s brow kit ‘Brow Zing’. I love a strong defined brow and this little compact comes with a powder to fill in any gaps and a paste to define. I always us Rimmel liquid eyeliner – definitely as good as MAC alternatives.

What are you must have make-up products? Would love to know any recommendations!

my hair: pimps & pinups

I have been meaning to write this post for a while. I often get asked where I get my hair done, what I ask for etc so thought it was about time I filled you dear readers in!

What I ask for: Balayage/ombre (where hair starts darker at the roots and fades through the lengths)

Where I go in London: Pimps & Pinups

Where I went in Ireland: Style Club

Before I discovered Pimps & Pinups I went to  Paul Edmonds near Harrods but their price tag put me off. The last time I went there for a cut, colour and highlights it cost me over £250 ! Way too much. To be honest it was not even worth that. I opted for balayage but the lines were not ‘softened’ enough. With good balayage you can’t really tell where the colour starts as it is subtly ‘painted’ on to your hair (often backcombed to create this effect). With Paul Edmonds, I could clearly see where the colour began and the highlights looked ‘blocky’.

The Pimps & Pinups Experience

Image from Kineda

My roommate recommended Rachel at Pimps & Pinups to me so I decided to give them a go. I had heard good things about them and I loved their website so figured it was worth a shot.

The salon itself has a trendy, East London vibe. All the staff look amazing and have the most beautiful tattoos! Every time I go in there I want to get a new tattoo…

The usual teas and coffees are on offer… but also wine and beer too. You also get a head massage at the sink which is one of my favourite things about going to the hairdressers.

Rachel is very friendly and put me at ease straight away. She  genuinely listens to what you have to say and doesn’t try to rush you when explaining how you want your hair. The first time I went there I opted for a more natural balayage look but on my most recent trip I decided to go for a more dip dye/bleached ends effect. The thing I love about Rachel is the fact that she really cares about customer satisfaction. Before leaving she always asks if I’m happy with my hair and to have a look when at home , before adding to give her a call with any problems.

What if you’re not 100% happy with the results?

Now, I hate complaining. It makes me feel awkward. I don’t necessarily feel awkward expressing my dissatisfaction. It is more how the other person reacts and makes me feel like I am the one at fault. On numerous occasions when returning clothes or asking for a different drink I have been met with a frosty stare and angered look, you’d swear I just told the person I hate them.

Anyway my point is, I think it is really important that people feel they can express what they really think of a haircut, meal etc. without feeling that they are the ones to blame. I once went back to Style Club in Dublin after getting my hair done as it really didn’t turn out right. They didn’t seem very happy with me. I spent the entire time feeling like I had done something wrong and couldn’t wait to get out of there. I wasn’t charged for the colour redo but was charged for the wash and blow-dry.

So, after my second trip to Rachel at Pimps & Pinups I went home and took a proper look at my hair – it looked really nice and the cut was great… but… it just wasn’t as blonde at the ends as I had wanted. As Rachel always said to call her with a problem I decided I may as well, otherwise I would have to wait three months until I got my hair done again and feel a bit ‘meh’ about my hair in the meantime.

When I went back to Rachel she was totally understandable and said she would make the ends really blonde for me! She wasn’t anyway awkward with me and chatted away as normal! The end result was perfect and exactly what  I wanted. The fact is that I always recommend Rachel to my friends and now even more so.  She also didn’t charge me a thing for the redo (although I tipped her for being so nice about it!) and I absolutely love the results! I can now also have a completely BLONDE bun!

Price: Pimps and Pin ups prices vary, but for me (cut, colour, highlights) it tends to be around £150. For exact prices I would advise ringing them: 020 7426 2121

Products

How I look after my hair: I use a purple toned condition by Redken (pic 3) to keep the brassiness out of my blonde. I also use Kevin Murphy’s ‘Young Again’  serum and Redken ‘Anti-snap’ (pic 1). If I am going out I use Headrush (pic 2) for extra shine! I let my hair dry naturally whenever possible and try to avoid straighteners!

Tip

Before I get my hair done I always create a new album on my phone of hair inspiration so I have a clear image in my head of what I want. I always think it is best to show your hairdresser a picture (or several!) of the colour you want as a lot can be lost in interpretation! Remember when Phoebe cut Monica’s hair in Friends?! Monica said Demi Moore… but Phoebe thought Dudley Moore! Make sure both you and the hairdresser have a clear picture of the look you’re going for to avoid Monica-esque tears! For ombre hair I tend to bring in photos of Alexa Chung, Rachel Bilson, Caroline Flack and any other nice photos I find in mags, Pinterest etc.

If you want some more hair inspiration check out my ‘Hair’ board on Pinterest!

What do you guys think? Let me know if you have any hair product recommendations or tips!

home sweet home – london – take three

I just realised that I haven’t yet blogged about my new bedroom.

Yes, yes I moved again.

Our previous landlord decided to refurbish our flat so after only living there for four months it was back to looking for a new place.

While our last flat was really lovely, I am a big believer that everything happens for a reason.

The two things that I didn’t love about the last place was the size of my room (tiny – even for me!) and the fact it was a basement flat. I get spooked easily so living in a basement flat had me constantly worried about break-ins, especially when in the flat by myself.

Luckily, I didn’t have to worry about finding a random person to live with as my lovely roommate and I decided to look for a place together. Hurrah! I saw my fair share of weirdos the first time around. This included a girl who said that every Friday and Saturday night the house basically turns into a drop in centre for those-who-never-sleep when she invites the whole of London back after clubbing to do lots of drugs into the early hours. If the stained carpets weren’t enough to put me off, this had me running for the hills. At least she was honest!

I love nice, homely, quiet flats where I can sleep. Call me boring, but I don’t like ‘party flats’. I want to come home after work and just be able to chill and not worry about a party being sprung on me on a weeknight (oh how I have changed from my university days!).

Our new flat is really lovely: very airy, nice big windows and a beautiful kitchen. My room has lots of storage space too which is a God send! All my stuff fits away neatly and there’s no clutter. The living room has lovely wooden floors and a big window. We are in the process of making this more ‘homely’ by getting a second sofa and a new table (the one there is massive and resembles a canteen/patio table with plastic chairs!). I have also spied a lovely rug in Urban Outfitters which I might buy for the winter months to make it cosy! I really love shopping for home supplies and Zara Home, Laura Ashley and the home section at M&S are no longer boring to me. Hmm, maybe it’s because I will be 25 next month…

Here are some snaps of my new room:

Room deets

I bought a hanger for the back of my door which I use to hang up long necklaces on the front of my wardrobe. I have so much lovely jewellery that I didn’t want it hidden so think this is a lovely way to showcase them.

My butterfly duvet cover is from M&S. I seem to have (inadvertently) bought a lot of butterfly related objects for my room over the years! The butterfly stickers are from Laura Ashley.

Potpourri is from M&S and smells divine! The bowl is also from M&S and was super cheap – I think £2 if I remember correctly.

I have listed where some of the other items are from on my blogpost about my previous house move.

Have you any tips on how to  make a room more homely or inventive ways to store your stuff?

up in the air

I am flying back home to Ireland for a nice long weekend this week.

Hurrah.

I was last home over Easter so looking forward to seeing family, friends and my lovely dogs and cat!

Last time I was on a plane was last month when I jetted off to sunny Tenerife for a week. I imagine the weather waiting for me in Ireland won’t be quite as warm…

The four hour flight to Tenerife was fine going out there as I was very excitedly chatting to my parents about my new job and London life, reading magazines and staring out the window at the fluffy clouds.

The return flight was another story.

I was mind numbingly bored. After spending a week with my parents I had run out of things to say, all magazines had been read and as it was a later flight it was dark outside so no cloud spotting.

Luckily the flight to Ireland from London is only 50 minutes!

When flying I always try to wear comfortable clothes as there is nothing worse than being stuck in a seat with tight, skinny jeans for several hours! This has happened me before and I had to slyly open my button – don’t judge! The problem is remembering to do it back up when leaving the plane, nobody wants to stand up only to realise that their jeans are now around their ankles.

This was my traveling outfit home from Tenerife:

Outfit deets

Top: Zara

Trousers: Bershka

Sandals: Topshop

Bikini: Topshop

Bag: Mulberry

Sunglasses: Raybans

I never really  know what to wear when flying. I always pack a pair of socks if I’m wearing sandals as I get so cold on flights. And once my feet are cold I have no hope! Plus I pack lots of layers. The problem is when you arrive at your destination: sandals to Ireland = wet toes and slipping to your death!

Image from Vichy USA

My new favourite thing for flights (and to bring to the park on hot days!) is Vichy Thermal Spa Water. I spray my face with it on a flight anytime I feel hot or need to perk up. Besides that I make sure I am stocked up with Rescue Remedy drops and plenty of magazines to distract myself during take-off.

I used to be a nervous flyer but have found myself getting more relaxed as the years have gone on. I still hate any sort of turbulence and have to sit by the window. In my head I feel more in control being able to see out. I have also started acupuncture in the last few months (I will do a blogpost on this if there’s interest at some stage too) and I find it really amazing.

Does anyone else have any flying tips? Any recommendations of what to bring on a flight?
